Online platform: ➚ Civey
Survey period: August 03 to 07, 2023
Surveyed population (sample size): Total German population aged 18 and over (2,500).
Overall result, evaluated according to "people who are involved in the topic of life sciences" (approximately 200)
This survey has been conducted in German.
In August 2023, the German Stem Cell Network (GSCN) surveyed 2500 people online about their opinion towards human embryonic stem cell research in Germany, specifically the German Stem Cell Act and the Embryo Protection Act.
The survey was carried out by ➚ Civey, of the 2500 respondents a target group of 200 persons with an interest in life sciences was cross referenced (previously confirmed). The answers are always broken down by overall result and "target group" (life sciences) both in the Excel document (in German and English) ↓ "GSCN_EmbryonaleStammzellforschung_DE_EN_0823.xlsx" and in the pdf (in German) ➙ "GSCN_EmbryonaleStammzellforschung_0823.pdf". In summary, these are some interesting results of the survey, which reflects the social atmosphere:
1) Majority pro research / A steady third remains opposed
In all areas, there were majorities in favor of research with embryos and embryonic stem cells. However, about 20-30% of respondents are always opposed to this research. This does not change with the target group (=interest in life sciences). Here only the agreement becomes larger, since there are fewer answers with "don't know" and "undecided".
Thus, a better knowledge of the life sciences generally leads to more approval of the research questions, while the disapproving group remains more or less the same in its attitude.
2) Men and East Germans more likely to be optimistic about research than women
Men are more likely to be positive about research (+12%) than women. East Germany seems to be generally more open and positive about research compared to West Germany.
3) Majority in favor of production and import of human embryonic stem cells
Only about 3-4% of the respondents like the current regulation on research with embryonic stem cells (production prohibited, import allowed). A clear majority, 46% and 64% respectively (among the target group, see above), think that production and import of human embryonic stem cells should be allowed. 25-30% oppose both production and import of these cells.
Among the target group, the group of "Don't know / Don't know" almost completely dissolves into the "Positive group".
4) Clear majority for changes in the law
Amendments to both laws (Embryo Protection Act (ESchG) and Stem Cell Act (StZG)) are supported by majorities: about 44% (ESchG, 54% in the target group) and 49% (StZG, 69% in the target group).
